More about the Mitsubishi Electric MAC-3000FT-E Deodorizing Filters – The Science.

Mitsubishi Electric MAC-3000FT-E OEM filter back side directly overhead

The odour removing Mitsubishi Electric MAC-3000FT-E filters are made from a fine aluminum honeycomb with a catalyst coating of manganese dioxide (MnO2) and silicon dioxide (SiO2).

Manganese dioxide (MnO₂) and silicon dioxide (SiO₂) can work together synergistically for odour removal in air or water purification systems, especially by leveraging their catalytic and absorptive properties.

Manganese Dioxide (MnO₂)Catalytic oxidation

MnO₂ is a strong oxidizing agent and acts as a catalyst in the breakdown of odorous compounds, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sulfur-containing compounds (like H₂S or mercaptans).
Mechanism: It promotes the oxidation of odorous molecules into less volatile or non-smelly compounds (like turning H₂S into elemental sulfur or SO₂).

Silicon Dioxide (SiO₂) – Adsorption medium

SiO₂, especially in the form of amorphous silica or silica gel, is highly porous and has a large surface area, making it excellent at adsorbing: Moisture, VOCs, and some odorous organic molecules.
While SiO₂ doesn’t chemically break down the molecules, it traps them physically—delaying or reducing their release into the air.

Together SiO2 captures odorous molecules, giving MnO2 time and proximity to oxidize them.

What is ‘Apple Catechin’?

Mitsubishi Electric Catechin Plus air purification system logo

‘Apple catechin’ as found in ductless mini-split air filters refers to a type of natural antibacterial and antiviral coating used on air filter media. Catechin is a type of flavonoid, a naturally occurring antioxidant found in green tea, apples, and other plants. In air filters, apple catechin is typically infused into the filter fibers to enhance its ability to trap and neutralize bacteria, viruses, and odours.

How It Works

  • Antibacterial Properties: Catechin can inhibit the growth of bacteria on the filter surface.
  • Antiviral Effects: It has some potential to inactivate certain viruses.
  • Odor Control: Catechin can help reduce unpleasant smells caused by organic compounds.
  • Natural and Safe: It’s derived from apples or other plant sources, making it a more environmentally friendly and health-conscious option compared to synthetic chemical treatments.

Where You’ll See It

Apple catechin filters are most commonly found in:

  • Residential air purifiers (especially in Japanese or Korean brands like Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu General, Daikin, Panasonic, or Sharp).
  • Some HVAC systems (mainly in systems that emphasize air quality and health benefits).
  • Air conditioning units (especially those marketed toward allergy sufferers or health-conscious consumers).

Does It Work?

It can be effective as a supplementary filter treatment, but it’s usually combined with other filtration technologies (like HEPA filters, activated carbon, or ionizers). On its own, apple catechin coating won’t replace mechanical filtration — it just adds a natural, passive layer of protection.

What’s the Difference between Charcoal vs. Enzyme Filters?

When it comes to air filters for your home or car, there are a variety of options available on the market. Two popular types of filters are activated charcoal filters and OEM anti-allergy enzyme filters. While both have their own benefits, there are some key differences between the two.

Activated Charcoal Filters:

Activated charcoal filters are made from carbon, which has been treated with oxygen to create millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. These pores help to trap chemicals and pollutants in the air, making them an effective way to improve air quality. Activated charcoal filters are often used to remove odors, smoke, and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air.

Benefits of Activated Charcoal Filters:

  1. Effective at removing odors and VOCs: Activated charcoal filters are highly effective at removing unpleasant odors and volatile organic compounds from the air.
  2. Long-lasting: Activated charcoal filters can last up to 6 months, making them a cost-effective option.
  3. Versatile: Activated charcoal filters can be used in a variety of applications, including air purifiers, refrigerators, and even in shoes to remove odors.

OEM Anti-Allergy Enzyme Filters:

Anti-allergy enzyme filters are designed to remove allergens such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander from the air. These filters are typically made from a combination of materials, including activated charcoal, and are designed to capture microscopic particles that can trigger allergies and asthma.

Benefits of Anti-Allergy Enzyme Filters:

  1. Effective at removing allergens: OEM anti-allergy enzyme filters are highly effective at removing allergens from the air, which can be especially beneficial for those with allergies or asthma.
  2. Customizable: OEM anti-allergy enzyme filters can be customized to fit a specific air purifier or HVAC system, ensuring a perfect fit and optimal performance.
  3. Long-lasting: OEM anti-allergy enzyme filters can last up to 12 months, making them a cost-effective option.

So, which filter is best for you?

Both activated charcoal filters and anti-allergy enzyme filters have their own benefits and drawbacks. If you’re looking to remove odors and VOCs from the air, an activated charcoal filter may be your best bet. However, if you suffer from allergies or asthma, an OEM anti-allergy enzyme filter may be a better choice. Ultimately, the best filter for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences.

Anti-allergy enzyme filters are filters that contain enzymes that help to eliminate allergens from the air. These filters are often used in air purifiers and HVAC systems. The enzymes in these filters are specifically designed to break down proteins found in common allergens such as pet dander, pollen, and dust mites. The broken down proteins are then trapped in the filter, reducing the amount of allergens in the air. This can help to reduce the symptoms of allergies, such as sneezing, itching, and watery eyes, for people with allergies or sensitivities. Anti-allergy enzyme filters are a safe and effective way to improve indoor air quality for those with allergies.

Our Frames 3D Printed with PLA or PETG

Backside view of two Mitsubishi Electric MAC-408FT-E compatible charcoal carbon filters with frames.

Some of our charcoal carbon filter frames for Mitsubishi Electric ductless systems are 3D printed using environmentally friendly PLA or PETG.

Polylactic Acid (PLA) is a biodegradable plastic that offers numerous environmental benefits. Unlike traditional petroleum-based plastics, PLA is made from renewable resources such as corn starch, sugarcane, or cassava roots, which reduces dependence on finite fossil fuels and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When disposed of in the right conditions, PLA biodegrades into water and carbon dioxide, leaving no toxic residue. Furthermore, the production process of PLA uses less energy and produces fewer harmful byproducts compared to the production of traditional plastics, making it a more sustainable option. The use of PLA can also help reduce waste in landfills and litter in the natural environment, making it a favorable choice for those concerned with environmental sustainability.

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) offers significant environmental benefits that contribute to sustainability efforts. One of its primary advantages is its full recyclability, which helps reduce plastic waste and supports a circular economy by allowing the material to be reprocessed and reused multiple times. This recyclability also contributes to a lower carbon footprint compared to other plastics, as it reduces the need for virgin material and the associated greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the production and processing of PETG are relatively energy-efficient, further minimizing its environmental impact. PETG is non-toxic and does not contain harmful substances like bisphenol A (BPA), making it safer for both the environment and human health. Its ease of fabrication results in less material waste during manufacturing. Moreover, some versions of PETG include biodegradable additives that enable the material to break down more quickly in landfills, enhancing its environmental benefits. Together, these attributes make PETG a more sustainable choice.
